Description:
Unbelievably Pristine 1860-Dated Lincoln & Hamlin Ferrotype, With Unusual Silvering in the Brass Frame. Slightly smaller portrait, but in condition fully the equal of the example in our November 2004 auction (#609 Lot 27238) which fetched $1955 after frenzied bidding. It is so hard to find these ferros in this incredible state, and, like in most collecting fields, the very choicest examples are always in great demand. This silvered frame is very rarely seen; usually they were plain brass. This is the final grouping from the fabled Joe Brown Collection. It may be many years, if ever, before an opportunity arises to buy such choice examples of these early classics. Most were collected by Brown nearly a half-century ago. Such magnificent examples rarely turn up these days. (Heritage Galleries description) (see 3620 to view the obverse side) (Item 3620_2)
