Description:
The First Fugitive Lists Issued by J. Edgar and the Bureau in 1932. The organization now known as the F.B.I. was created as a force of Special Agents in 1908 called the Bureau of Investigation in order to act as a Federal police force, the primary investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. The legendary J. Edgar Hoover was appointed director in 1924 and, on July 1, 1932, the organization was renamed the United States Bureau of Investigation. Just shortly after that, they began issuing monthly booklets entitled FUGITIVES Wanted by POLICE. The first of these is dated September 1, 1932 and, right there on page one, is listed a criminal immortalized in song and film, Clyde Barrow! A member of his gang, Raymond Hamilton, is also listed in this first issue, wanted for breaking jail (with Clyde's help) and assault to murder (again with Clyde's help).

This lot contains six of these incredibly interesting and historically significant booklets from 1932-33, including the first five consecutive issues. Besides the lists of criminals, their aliases, and crimes, there are fascinating articles about law, evidence gathering and forensics, testimony, and methodology. The two bulletins from 1933 are issued by the Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice- the name change was brought about by their merger with the Bureau of Prohibition. It would still be a couple of years before the Federal Bureau of Investigation name was coined. Also, it would be 1949 before the Bureau would compile their "Ten Most Wanted" lists- this is definitely the forerunner of that. There is a "ton" of great information here about the criminals and the Bureau's operations during the early 1930s- perfect for the historian or researcher. All six books are 8" x 10.5" in size, paperbound and in fine condition. They all have contemporary red pencil "x" marks across several of the crooks contained therein, probably a record kept by the conscientious agent who originally received these. Please note: Another, larger group of these are also offered in this auction. (Heritage Galleries description) (see 3629_2 to view another of the booklets) (Item 3629)
