Description:
Maxfield Parrish - circa 1930s. Seller's description, "Parrish was well know for being extremely camera shy. He compared sitting for a photograph as to being worse than getting a tooth pulled! However, the pressure to have a photo done must have been extreme. For in the early 30's he put on his best suit, drove into town, and went through the torment of having his photo taken. Only 24 copies were made! He sent them only to special friends/collectors, or the news media. In fact, most of the photos that you see of him in the news and articles of the day used this photo. Of these 24 photo's he autographed only a few. It took me years to find one of these photo's, but it was worth the wait. His signatures on letters and checks aren't rare, but an autographed personal photo is extremely rare. I've only heard of 4 extant, and of these four only three are autographed. To the best of my knowledge this is the only photo that he sat for and the only one that he autographed. Of the four this is the only one that is complete with its display folder, and the original mailing envelope. The photo has a beautiful sepia tone quality to it that seems to glow! The autograph is strong and bold, and is the finest of the three. The photograph also includes impeccable provenance in a hand written letter from the original owners granddaughter" (Item 3676)
